The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate

Incoherent and inconsistent, this martial arts action-adventure spectacular from master Hong Kong director Hark Tsui is yet another disappointing outing for actor Jet Li, with 3D unable to add anything extra special to the wuxia genre. The action is dominated by wire work – with characters spinning and jumping impossibly as they fight it out with swords, daggers and throwing knives, but the story starts spinning out of control as well, as too many plotlines compete for attention.

Short storyline

Jet Li plays Ming Dynasty General Chow Wai On who is battling it out with the secret forces of the Eunuchs that control the Empire. On the run from his corrupt superior Yu Hua Tian (Chen Kun), Chow ends up at the infamous Dragon Gate Inn, the site of a nearby lost city (full of gold) that has been covered by sand for sixty years. At the inn Chow tangles with a gang of treasure hunters who await a huge storm that will reveal the location of the lost city, and meets a pregnant maid who has escaped the royal palace (chased by nasty guards) but who is being protected by a mysterious female warrior named Ling Yan Qui (Zhou Xun) who seems to be an ex-lover of Chow. As the huge storm approaches, the various gangs and factions eye each other off and then battle it out for either the gold, their honour, love, and/or because they just plain like a good flying sword fight.

The film is a remake of Tsui’s earlier work New Dragon Gate Inn, and its wire work and special effects no longer hold much thrill, often appearing clumsily sped-up or awkwardly manipulated. The female characters are much more interesting than their male counterparts, with Zhou Xun glowing as the deadly and nimble swordswoman, and Taiwanese actress Kwai Lun Mei stealing the show as the tribal leader of the treasure hunters. With the film written, directed and produced by Hark Tsui he has no-one else to blame for final outcome – a disappointing story told with excessive monotony and repetitive ninja antics.
